I’ve been a do-it-myself kind of person for as long as I can remember. I’d much rather try and solve my problems or take care of my business by myself as much as possible. Of course, this pattern was established early on from my father telling me not to bother others.
People Helping People
The fact is, people like helping people. I recall a conversation with a friend many years ago in which she told me that if I wouldn’t let her help me then she wouldn’t let me help her. That hit home and I finally understood the value of give and take, and what a blessing it was to receive as much as to provide.
We’ve all encountered opportunities lately in which to give and receive. Whether we give anonymously or openly, the effects can be profound. Many years ago, a young relative of mine was going through some life problems. He had to work them out over time, and he received a lot of assistance from family, friends, and professionals. Behind the scenes, many of us were praying and finding ways to support him and his immediate family.
Who Supports You
I remember thinking at the time that he had no idea how many people were supporting him emotionally and spiritually. He likely never will know, and that’s okay. He pulled through his difficulties and now is a wonderful husband, father, and human being. All the support he got helped him to get through that tough time to this point in his life today.
Each of us has an opportunity to give and receive support each day as we need it. If you think about your time during any Hoffman program, you found out who supports you. You were supported by the teachers, fellow students, the Hoffman staff, and even loved ones at home who were awaiting your return.
The Spirit in You
Even in times of angst, trouble, or loneliness, there is likely someone who is thinking of you and wishing you well. It may be someone you know, and it could be someone you pass while walking in your neighborhood.
I’m reminded of something we say in the Hoffman Process, “The Spirit in me sees the Spirit in you.” As long as we keep seeing the Spirit in others – and ourselves – support is all around us.

This resonated! I’m a loner in many ways. I have wonderful friends. Our process group still, to this day, almost 3 years later, keeps in touch. I know my friends and process buddies would be there for me in a heartbeat. Thanks for this Shawn!

Thanks, Gary. It’s good to hear that your Process group still keeps in touch. Now that’s support!
